Opportunity Road
This poem was written by Mary ~ April, 1964, and informally published in a manuscript entitled More Observations. At her funeral service, it was read by her son James, and his daughter Annalisa Culbert (i.e. my dad & sister).
“How shall I know?” said the younger
“Which curve or turn I should make?”
“Opportunity lies endless” said elder
“But you must decide which to take.”
“But what if I fail?” said younger
“What if I miss the right turn?”
Why then, you’ll be smarter” said elder
And that is the best way to learn.”
“Won’t you direct me? said younger
“Can’t you take me where the road lies?”
“I can point out the way” said the elder
“But to guide you there would not be wise.”
**
When I was much younger said elder,
I wandered rough path and terrain;
I too had to learn of the crossroads
And the directions I should maintain.
I followed some curious pathways
And crossed over streams tumbling past;
I traveled down many a highway
But I found opportunity at last.
And now I rest by the side of the road
And I know that none other would do;
I followed my best where it led me
And I leave opportunity to you.
